EPL: Pogba shines as Manchester United win again

Paul Pogba on Sunday inspired Manchester United to a 4-1 win over AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Pogba for the second time in five days scored twice as Manchester United continued their resurgence under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho.

The midfielder has since been getting encomiums for his displays.

A former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, on his twitter handle wrote: Extremely pleased for Paul Pogba & Man. United in general at this demonstration of world class football: Build up,defense and in finishing,Pogba’s been just brilliant the last 3 games. happy 4 D lad!!”

With four goals and three assists, December 2018 has been Paul Pogba’s best ever month for league goal involvements in his top-flight career according to Opta Stats.

An English football legend, Garry Lineker, was also full of praises for Pogba as he wrote on his twitter handle: “Magnificent performance from @paulpogba in this game. Not only has his passing been divine but he looks a constant threat now that the shackles are off this @ManUtd side.”

United’s revival since Solskjaer replaced Mourinho has been phenomenal.

A third consecutive victory keeps United eight points adrift of Chelsea in the fight for a top-four finish.

Marcus Rashford also shone as the England international’s stunning run and cross teed up Pogba’s opener before he scored United’s third.

Nathan Ake pulled a goal back for Bournemouth just before half-time, but Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to round off the scoring before Eric Bailly was shown a late red card to leave United to finish with 10 men.

Next up for United is a trip to Newcastle United on January 2, while Bournemouth will attempt to return to winning ways when they welcome Watford on the same night.

Meanwhile in the other Premier League games played on Sunday, Chelsea and Manchester City secured away wins over Crystal Palace and Southampton respectively.

Solskjaer offers Pogba Vice-Captaincy as Ashley Young becomes Captain

Published

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will only offer Paul Pogba a vice-captaincy role at Manchester United next season, with the armband instead going to veteran Ashley Young.

It emerged on Tuesday that Solskjaer was prepared to give Pogba the captaincy in an effort to persuade the midfielder to snub interest from Real Madrid and commit to the Red Devils.

However, The Times now say that Pogba will in fact be offered a deputy role, with Young to take over from Antonio Valencia as the new United captain.

The 33-year-old is the most senior player at the club and has often worn the armband this past season, with previous skipper Antonio Valencia only making six league appearances.

But United are looking to sign a new, first-choice right-back this summer – Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been mooted – meaning Young will often not be on the pitch.

Solskjaer has therefore narrowed down the candidates to be United’s on-pitch captain when Young is not in the side to three names: Pogba, David de Gea and Chris Smalling.

Nevertheless, there is still a belief that being part of the leadership team at United will give Pogba pause to consider staying at Old Trafford.

Chelsea has been ordered to pay former boss Antonio Conte £9million in compensation.

Conte, who won the Premier League and FA Cup during his two years in west London, has been embroiled in a bitter divorce from the club.

The Italian was sacked last summer and engaged in a legal fight with the Blues, citing unfair dismissal.

Conte, who has held off taking another job during the past 12 months, wanted the final year of his contact paid in full.

Now, a three-person Premier League managers’ arbitration tribunal has sided with Conte in the bitter dispute.

However, if Chelsea refuse to accept the tribunal’s ruling, then the judgment can be challenged in the High Court.

Conor McGregor has revealed he wants a rematch of his fight with Floyd Mayweather, saying he’s 100% confident he will defeat Floyd.

“I would like to rematch him under boxing rules, again,” Cornor said to Tony Robbins during a recent interview,  “and I believe I would win.”

“Actually, there I go again with that fake humbleness, I KNOW I WOULD WIN!” He affirmed.

Recall that Conor first fought Floyd back in August 2017, but Floyd beating on Conor so badly in the 10th round, the referee stopped the fight.

“When I went into the fight in the early rounds I was WHOOPING him in the early rounds,” Conor said, “I went back to my corner after the 1st round and I said, ‘This is easy!'”

However, Conor says Floyd switched up his style going from a “back-footed,” defensive approach to a more aggressive “Mexican style.”

Conor says the switch shows how talented Floyd is, but he says he can prepare better for that alternative style and crush Floyd in a rematch.
