Defection: We didn't have prior knowledge of Akpabio's visit to Buhari - PDP

Following the withdrawal of his case filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which sought to challenge his Senate re-election loss, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the  Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District in the February 23rd Senatorial election, Godswill Akpabio, and his party, have approached the Election Tribunal, sitting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to kick-start the legal processes, that would lead to the validation of his victory at the poll.

Akpabio is seeking to upturn the victory of Mr Christopher Ekpenyong and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), based on perceived electoral irregularities which characterised the said election.

The former Senate Minority Leader, had while the election was ongoing, besieged the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging cases of infractions and deliberate violations of the electoral law and guidelines during the senatorial election.

In the said election, INEC had in collaboration with some PDP chieftains in the senatorial district, wrongfully declared Mr. Ekpeyong and his party, the PDP, winner of the poll, having scored 118,215 as against Akpabio’s 83,158.

However, incontrovertible result sheets from Akwa Ibom INEC office showed different figures that had Akpabio securing 138,256 votes as against Ekpeyong’s 123,843.

Dissatisfied with the conduct and outcome of the election, the former governor of Akwa Ibom and his party vowed to approach the election petition tribunal to ventilate their grievances as well as reclaim their  stolen mandate.

Hon. Kunle  Oluomo, Deputy Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, was the first victim of the rampaging thugs when he had his constituency office in Ifo, together with five vehicles, set ablaze.

The Constituency office of Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal House of Representatives member, was also not spared as hoodlums stormed and burnt it down.

The hoodlums seized on the grand finale of the town’s annual Akoogun festival to perpetrate the dastardly acts.

It was learnt that operatives of the Special Anti–Robbery Squad (SARS) had trailed one of the boys suspected to have masterminded the arson to the venue of the Akoogun Festival for gun possession. Dogara accuses Buhari administration of vote buying

Youth groups, opinion leaders and stakeholders in the Niger Delta region have resolved to throw their weight solidly behind the return of the incumbent, the Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Representatives, for the leadership of NASS.

The Niger Delta youth groups and stakeholders have consequently unveiled plans for a systematic lobby of relevant personalities including federal lawmakers from the oil-rich region to work towards the re-election of Dogara as the House Speaker.

A prominent leader from the region, Dr. Ufuoma Omakara made the disclosure during a chat with newsman, saying the decision was part of resolutions reached at the meeting of leaders of affiliate groups under the aegis of Coalition of Niger-Delta Youth Groups and Stakeholders’ Forum, weekend.

He said the decision to back and recommend Speaker Dogara for the Reps number one seat was informed by his outstanding leadership qualities that saw the House remaining well-coordinated since 2015 when he assumed the position.

According to him, the Nigerian House of Representatives have neither seen such tranquility, nor exhibited the diligence that has been it’s hallmark since the return to democracy in 1999, until the coming of the Dogara’s leadership, which gave a sense of belonging to the Green Chamber lawmakers as well as brought pride to Nigerians.
