Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets Crush Cote d’Ivoire In Qualifiers

Nigeria were 2-1 winners over hosts Niger Republic on Wednesday in Niamey to book a date with Ghana and rekindle a 67-year-old Nigeria-Ghana rivalry.

The victory ensured the Golden Eaglets will take on the Black Starlets in Niamey on Saturday for a place in the 2019 Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations finals billed for Tanzania.

The Eaglets kept their heads and did the hard work they had to do by beating hosts Niger Republic 2-1 in a very competitive match at the General Seyni Kountche Stadium.

It was sweet revenge for the five-time world champions, as the Nigerien side had knocked out the Eaglets from the 2017 Africa Under-17 finals on a 3-2 aggregate.

That was when the home-and-away leg contests still held sway in the African qualifiers.

Following a change in the old format, countries in each of Africa’s six football regions now gather in one venue to take part in qualifying tournaments.

Only the winning teams are now eligible for the final tournament, with the region of the defending champions producing two qualifiers.

Akinwumi Amoo set the Eaglets on their way with a fine finish from a pullout in the 45th minute.

Olakunle Oluwasegun, who was later named “Man of the Match’’, made the scoreline comfortable with another magnificent strike two minutes before the hour.

He had scored a brace in the 2-3 defeat to Burkina Faso in their opening match and another in the 5-1 mauling of Cote d’Ivoire last week.

The home team pulled a goal back late on but the Nigerian boys held on to qualify for the final match against Ghana.

The Ghanaians had earlier defeated Cote d’Ivoire in the first semi-final match played at the same venue.

The finals of the 2019 Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations will hold in Tanzania. (NAN)

Solskjaer offers Pogba Vice-Captaincy as Ashley Young becomes Captain

Published

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will only offer Paul Pogba a vice-captaincy role at Manchester United next season, with the armband instead going to veteran Ashley Young.

It emerged on Tuesday that Solskjaer was prepared to give Pogba the captaincy in an effort to persuade the midfielder to snub interest from Real Madrid and commit to the Red Devils.

However, The Times now say that Pogba will in fact be offered a deputy role, with Young to take over from Antonio Valencia as the new United captain.

The 33-year-old is the most senior player at the club and has often worn the armband this past season, with previous skipper Antonio Valencia only making six league appearances.

But United are looking to sign a new, first-choice right-back this summer – Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been mooted – meaning Young will often not be on the pitch.

Solskjaer has therefore narrowed down the candidates to be United’s on-pitch captain when Young is not in the side to three names: Pogba, David de Gea and Chris Smalling.

Nevertheless, there is still a belief that being part of the leadership team at United will give Pogba pause to consider staying at Old Trafford.

Chelsea has been ordered to pay former boss Antonio Conte £9million in compensation.

Conte, who won the Premier League and FA Cup during his two years in west London, has been embroiled in a bitter divorce from the club.

The Italian was sacked last summer and engaged in a legal fight with the Blues, citing unfair dismissal.

Conte, who has held off taking another job during the past 12 months, wanted the final year of his contact paid in full.

Now, a three-person Premier League managers’ arbitration tribunal has sided with Conte in the bitter dispute.

However, if Chelsea refuse to accept the tribunal’s ruling, then the judgment can be challenged in the High Court.

Conor McGregor has revealed he wants a rematch of his fight with Floyd Mayweather, saying he’s 100% confident he will defeat Floyd.

“I would like to rematch him under boxing rules, again,” Cornor said to Tony Robbins during a recent interview,  “and I believe I would win.”

“Actually, there I go again with that fake humbleness, I KNOW I WOULD WIN!” He affirmed.

Recall that Conor first fought Floyd back in August 2017, but Floyd beating on Conor so badly in the 10th round, the referee stopped the fight.

“When I went into the fight in the early rounds I was WHOOPING him in the early rounds,” Conor said, “I went back to my corner after the 1st round and I said, ‘This is easy!'”

However, Conor says Floyd switched up his style going from a “back-footed,” defensive approach to a more aggressive “Mexican style.”

Conor says the switch shows how talented Floyd is, but he says he can prepare better for that alternative style and crush Floyd in a rematch.
