A 52-year-old man, Dennis Agya Kiyeye, is currently cooling his heels at the facilities of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ekiti State Command, over conspiracy and attempted murder of a 15-year-old girl (names withheld).
The victim, who was said to be Kiyeye’s niece, has been living with him since 2013 after the demise of her mother in Benue State. The Commandant of NSDC in Ekiti, Solomon Iyamu, told newsmen that Dennis Kiyeye defiled and impregnated the girl at a farm settlement known as Ilupeju-Ijan in Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
According to the Commandant, Kiyeye confessed to an have been sleeping with the girl for the past three years and the act has become normal for two of them.
The incest resulted into pregnancy in 2016, but was kept a secret with the help of a quack midwife, who assisted them to terminate the pregnancy.
Dennis claimed that the pregnancy was jointly owned by him and one Kunle who happened to be the girl’s school mate in the village.
Iyamu said: “Dennis explained that the girl later became pregnant for him again and due to the shame he had caused himself, he conspired to terminate her life in a nearby bush around the village.”
However, the girl was rescued by a good Samaritan who reported the act to the Village Head of the community.
The Village Head, Chief Adebisi Olaoye, explained that the suspect is a man of questionable character.
He said: “After the sinful act became open to the people of the village, his movement became suspicious.”
Chief Olaoye added that people in the village have been watching the suspect to determine the veracity of the information they had heard.
He confirmed the claim that Dennis was arrested by the people, while attempting to kill the girl.
Nigeria’s economy slows in Q1 as oil sector shrinks
Growth in Nigeria’s fragile economy slowed to 2.01% in the first quarter as the country’s dominant oil sector shrank, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday.
The annual pace dropped from the previous quarter’s 2.38%, when activity was likely to have been boosted by state spending in the run-up to February and March elections in which President Muhammadu Buhari won a second term.
Nigeria’s central bank has forecast growth of 3% for 2019.
The largely crude-dependent economy emerged from recession in 2017 and has been recovering in great part due to higher oil prices.
In the first quarter the non-oil sector grew 2.47% while the oil sector shrank 2.40%, according to the statistics office. Crude production rose slightly to 1.96 million barrels per day from 1.91 million in the previous quarter.
Growth in the first quarter of 2018 was 1.89%.
Cleaners find bodies of twin babies in Kenya River
Kenya’s authorities say the bodies of two babies, thought to be twins, have been found during a clean-up of a river in the capital, Nairobi.
This is the eighth such discovery in recent months.
Officials believe the bodies are being dumped in the city’s rivers as a result of abortions, which are illegal in most cases in Kenya.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has called for an investigation into what he called a “worrying trend”.
Several workers were cleaning up the badly polluted Nairobi River that flows through Korogocho, one of the city’s biggest slums, when they made the grim discovery.
They found the babies’ bodies in a plastic bag. One was still breathing but could not be saved.
The babies were buried near where they were discovered after the police said the parents could not be identified, governor’s spokesperson Elkana Jacob told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme.
Governor Sonko believes that hospitals and clinics are dumping the bodies after performing abortions.
He has given his officials a week to investigate the issue.
As well as eight babies, four dead adults have also been found during the exercise to clean up the city’s rivers.
