Those searching for the meaning of double standard need not search any longer. The DSS has offered a classic example of that word. Addressing the press yesterday, spokesperson of the DSS, Maryln Ogar had characterised as "wicked" any thought of inviting former Army Chief, Mr Azubuike Ihejirika, for interrogation over the allegation of his sponsorship of Boko Haram by the Austaralian, Stephen Davies.
According to Ogar,Ihejirika had served the country well as an Army officer hence it would be absurd to harbour any thought of quizzing him based on the allegations.
But in a curious twist, she said the service would quiz former Borno State gov., Modu Sheriff, over his sponsorship of Boko Haram as alleged by the Austalian. The illogicality of this perhaps, has escaped Mrs Marylin.
Soldiering is not the only public service recognised by the constitution. A governor is a public servant, who enjoys more prominence than an Army general. If service in the public service is now a measure of govt's confidence in one, then Modu Sherriff too should not be quizzed by DSS being a former public servant. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander.
And how will Mrs Ogar reconcile her absolution of Ihejirika with the arrests and prosecutions of Generals Obasanjo and Ishaya Bamaiyi? Obasanjo was even a four-star general with combat experience unlike Ihejirika, who was a three-star general with no combat experience. Yet the former on suspicion of having committed a crime, was arrested, prosecuted and jailed. A presidential pardon came his way after 3 years in prison. So?
Unless President Jonathan is pusillanimous about the war on insurgency, he should not leave any stone unturned - Precious Eze, Nigerian Journalist.
